Before you buy
Before you spend your money it is a good idea to ask yourself "What do I want to use the radio for and who am I going to talk to?" Remember that UHF radio is only line of sight contact, so if you are looking for long distance DX to overseas countries then you would be better off with a CB radio, but for this you need a licence.
If you live in a built up area then you will not get very far with the 446 radios, remember they only put out 500mw (if you are lucky!). However, the open countryside is a different matter, and you will be able to cover a good few miles. I live in a tower block in north London so as you would expect I am able to get out some miles. I find it a very nice band to use and at night when the businesses that use it during the day close for the night I find that the band is very clear. I would like to know how far I can get out on this Telcom 100 handheld as I face north. If anyone who lives to the north of London would like to make a time with me, please email me or just give me a call any night on Ch8.
However, one thing to remember is that conversations are not private and many people may be on Channel at any given time.
Ideal use for the 446 band is sporting events, car to car in convoy, camping or caravanning with the kids.

Can I Modify My Radios?
No, this is against the law, but some of the pages on our links page give information on how this can be done. Please note: The webmasters of this site take no responsibility for the links contained therein.
